person struggles in communication

When having discussions about communications or even about giving presentations people usually tend to say I am either a decent or really good communicator. What these people don’t really know is that I do have struggles when I communicate. When I communicate with other people my problem is that I usually let my emotions get the best of me when certain topics or situations come up in a conversation. When it comes to presentations my struggle is that I don’t show any signs of nervousness. But, I along with people who really know me can tell when I am nervous. It shows because when I get nervous in presentations I will talk very fast.  Sometimes, I will tend to forget to talk about things that need to be said in my presentation or just rush through the presentation and my audience wouldn’t understand or get what I was attempting to send. I hope that through taking a course like in a field like communications will help me address such struggles with learning about all the different styles of communications. I would also get the opportunity to learn what kind of communicator I am and learn what I would need to do to overcome the struggles that I have as well learn about what I need to do to help me become a better communicator in this field.

public advocacy

For the past few weeks we have been learning about what public advocacy is and what it consists of. In this entry I would like to discus about a discussion question about public advocacy that comes from the textbook. What the book wants to know is how does purpose audience and voice each contribute to your argument? I think that in arguments, purpose, audience, and voice equally contribute to what I am arguing. The reason why I believe this is that in order to have a successful argument you need to have a legitimate purpose on why you are arguing and with that that purpose you have voice you purpose. But as communicator people need to understand that an audience usually isn’t just a teacher it could be your whole class or even a community. Knowing what kind of audience you have can help you develop strong powerful, effective writing and presentations. With public advocacy there are other categories that you need to be an effective communicator. It doesn’t matter what type of communication; you are preforming you are going to need topic selection and a good thesis to help support what your purpose is. Topic selection is important because your topic should meet what the purpose of the assignment is. This topic should meet the interest of the audience should have a lot of information so that the audience could understand it better. Once you picked your topic, you have are going to need to have a thesis to show your audience what you hope to accomplish in what your are sending to them. With creating a thesis, you need to state your position in what you are supporting or against. Make sure that what you are supporting is an arguable claim; something you must support though your analysis. After reading and going through lectures of public advocacy I finally understand its importance. With out public advocacy I wouldn’t be able to properly communicate to people in an organized matter. Having a purpose voice and audience can help you present your topic and thesis you accomplish what your assignment or point is to whom you are sending your message.

that awkward first post

Since this is my first post of the semester from my blog for this course I’m just going to base what I plan on to write from the syllabus.   What first interested me in communications was when I took my first communication class at my community college De Anza College. I took an intro to speech class and as I was in that class I was very interested in how there was various styles of communications. After taking that course I started taking more courses in communications studies for example cultural communications and argumentative debate. That college really didn’t have any classes that were specifically about communication studies like they have here at San Jose State so I stopped taking communication course there till I transferred. What I think of communication studies as a field is field where you get to explore the different styles of communication and how it has a large impact on the world functions. Since it’s the beginning of the semester I really don’t know yet what really counts as communication studies or what doesn’t count. So far I could say that what counts as communication studies would be wide range of topics and contexts ranging from face-to-face conversation to speeches to mass media outlets such as television broadcasting. What I think at the moment, as what doesn’t count as communication studies is speech classes. I say this because in courses like that I really didn’t learn a lot about communication like I did in my other course that I took in communication. There are numerous fields that a person could be in with a communication studies degree. What I want to do with a communication degree has not been decided because I want to work in either education as a teacher or counselor. I also would like to work for a non-profit organization and work as a program coordinator.
