that awkward first post

Since this is my first post of the semester from my blog for this course I’m just going to base what I plan on to write from the syllabus.   What first interested me in communications was when I took my first communication class at my community college De Anza College. I took an intro to speech class and as I was in that class I was very interested in how there was various styles of communications. After taking that course I started taking more courses in communications studies for example cultural communications and argumentative debate. That college really didn’t have any classes that were specifically about communication studies like they have here at San Jose State so I stopped taking communication course there till I transferred. What I think of communication studies as a field is field where you get to explore the different styles of communication and how it has a large impact on the world functions. Since it’s the beginning of the semester I really don’t know yet what really counts as communication studies or what doesn’t count. So far I could say that what counts as communication studies would be wide range of topics and contexts ranging from face-to-face conversation to speeches to mass media outlets such as television broadcasting. What I think at the moment, as what doesn’t count as communication studies is speech classes. I say this because in courses like that I really didn’t learn a lot about communication like I did in my other course that I took in communication. There are numerous fields that a person could be in with a communication studies degree. What I want to do with a communication degree has not been decided because I want to work in either education as a teacher or counselor. I also would like to work for a non-profit organization and work as a program coordinator.

  1. The comm classes here at sjsu was what converted me into a comm major as well. I still remember my first comm class here at sjsu. The class was Comm 10 with professor Sevilla. We learned about communication in relationships and cutural communication and it was awesome! I agree that there are numerous fields that a student can enter with a comm degree.
